Follow the Field Update #10

Follow the Field presented by A Farm Kid's Guide to Agriculture

Happy Friday! And even better since we’re at the beginning of a long weekend. 🙂 Here’s this week in pictures:

8/30/19 Update:

Cover Crop Soybeans (105 Days)

Even the soybeans have grown taller than the yard stick! These are some tall beans.

Please excuse the terrible job I did opening these pods. Each pod has three developing soybeans. The one on the left is a little further along than the one on the right. The one on the left is from the bottom of the soybean plant and the one on the right is from the top of the soybean plant. Remember how the flowers developed from bottom up while the plant was still growing in its vegetative stages while starting the reproductive stages? Well, the flowers on the top bloomed and were pollinated after the flowers on the bottom had begun growing pods, so it makes since that the pods on top are a little behind. The soybeans have stopped flowering at this point and should be putting most of their energy towards filling out these pods at this point. There won’t be any more soybeans in these pods at this point – just the three that are already there.

Corn (87 Days)

I didn’t even bother with the yard stick this week. The corn is at least 3 to 4 feet over my head anyway.

Lots happening inside of that ear!

…or not. That’s not supposed to look like that, but thanks to my photography scouting, I let my dad know so someone can fully scout the field and figure out what’s going on.

THIS is what it’s supposed to look like. This is a photo from the field right across the road, so now we know that the issue above is probably isolated to that other field or even just a small section of that other field.

No-Till Soybeans (83 Days)

Look at those beautiful beans!

That’s all for this week. It’ll be pretty quiet in these fields (hopefully) until things start to dry down in preparation for harvest. We could use some more heat though, so please don’t wish away those sunny days in the upper 80s just yet!

Not being a girl from the farm, I have learned a lot from your updates! Thanks for teaching me some things about the fields!
